Inclusion at Harrogate High School

Our Approach

Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do. We believe every student deserves an ambitious, knowledge-rich education that helps them thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Our curriculum is designed to be accessible to all learners, removing barriers and promoting equality so every child can achieve their full potential.

SEND Support

We are committed to supporting students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in line with the statutory SEND Code of Practice. Our SENCO and Inclusion Team work closely with families and external agencies to ensure early identification and effective provision. Support may include:

  • Personalised learning strategies

  • Targeted interventions for literacy, numeracy, and social skills

  • Access arrangements for exams

  • Specialist programmes such as dyslexia screening and travel training

If you have any queries regarding SEND, please contact: send@hhs.nsat.org.uk

Clubs and Interventions

We offer a range of opportunities to help students feel supported and connected, including:

  • Breakfast Club and Homework Club

  • Break and Lunch Clubs for social interaction

  • After-school activities to build confidence and friendships

Working with Families

Partnership with parents and carers is key to our success. We keep families informed and involved through regular communication, review meetings, and collaborative planning to ensure the best outcomes for every child. This includes our termly Parent Forum and SEND Parent Forum further information of which can be found here

Dyslexia Screening

One of the teaching assistants screens students for dyslexic traits. If any traits are identified intervention is put into place from one of the literacy programmes. Parents are informed of the findings as well as strategies that are sent to all the students teaching staff.  Overlays are also provided if students find them useful.

Access Arrangement Screening

Students take the Lucid Exact test which is a one hour electronic assessment that gives details about each student’s literacy skills as well as their processing skills. If their score is lower than average they may be entitled to special exam arrangement including extra time or a reader.

Social Skills Group

Our Hub team are able to run this group for students who suffer from social isolation and/or need help to deal with their emotions. It takes place in the Hub where students can learn skills to open up and confront feelings as well as be able to build trusting relationships with adults and friendships with peers.

Reading Intervention

The Reading Intervention Programme is offered to those students who need an extra boost with their reading skills. The programme is aimed at students who have a reading age that is lower than their chronological age and is delivered in the Hub as part of the Hub offer of academic interventions.

KS2 Transition Programme

Every year in the summer term, we offer a transition programme for vulnerable students to familiarise themselves with the school and staff. This runs prior to the whole school transition days. The Year 7 Student Support Officer and Head of Year are involved in the programme as all primary schools are visited prior to this intervention by themselves and the Inclusion Officer. The SEND team/Inclusion Officer visits the SEN/vulnerable students who are identified by the primary school SENCO to plan for any intervention they may need once they start HHS.

English as an Additional Language Support

Students who attend Harrogate High School and who do not have English as their first language are closely monitored and supported by the Inclusion department. Students are given extra time in the Inclusion Department to work on improving their English skills as well as being supported in lessons. All students who have English as an additional language are monitored and resources and equipment are provided as necessary including dictionaries.
