Curriculum Intent |
At Harrogate High School, our Music curriculum aims to inspire creativity, confidence, and a lifelong love of music. We believe that music is a powerful form of expression that enriches students’ cultural, emotional, and intellectual development. Through a broad and inclusive curriculum, we provide opportunities for all learners to perform, compose, and appreciate music from a wide range of genres, traditions, and historical periods. |

Links to CARES values |
Courage – We never give up! In Music we encourage students to take risks in their musical pursuits. Whether performing in front of peers, experimenting with new instruments, or composing original pieces, students learn the value of perseverance. Music inherently involves a commitment to continual improvement, as musicians must practice diligently to refine their craft. Through tasks such as preparing for a performance or tackling intricate compositions, students are taught to face their fears and embrace the learning journey, understanding that it is through courage that they grow. Aspiration – We work hard to make our dreams happen. We strive to motivate students to work hard towards their goals in music. Students are encouraged to explore various genres and styles, fostering a deep appreciation for different musical traditions and aspirations. Music allows students to envision their future possibilities, whether that is becoming a performer, a music educator, or a sound technician. By setting high expectations and encouraging students to push their boundaries, we are nurturing a culture of ambition and hard work. Respect – We treat others how we wish to be treated. Music thrives on collaboration; students are often required to work in ensembles or groups, where they must listen actively and respect the contributions of their peers. Fostering an environment where every voice is valued, promoting a sense of community within Music. Students learn to appreciate diverse musical backgrounds, recognising that each individual has a unique perspective to offer. Equality – We accept others for who they are. Music has the remarkable ability to unite people from various backgrounds, celebrating diversity and fostering inclusivity. Students are taught to appreciate different musical cultures and traditions, understanding the rich tapestry that music weaves across society. By embracing equality, we cultivate an atmosphere where every student is empowered to express themselves creatively, irrespective of their starting point or background. Self-control – We manage our behaviour and impulses. Students are introduced to the concept of discipline through their engagement with music, as the process of mastering an instrument or honing a vocal technique demands focus and patience. Our curriculum encourages students to manage their behaviour and impulses, whether when rehearsing in a group setting or when navigating the complexities of musical theory. This fosters a sense of responsibility, as students learn that success in music, as in life, requires self-discipline and commitment. |

Links to British Values |
Our Music curriculum is seamlessly linked to the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Music serves as a universal language that transcends societal barriers, enabling students to engage with diverse perspectives. The exploration of various musical styles, from classical to contemporary, allows students to appreciate the rich cultural heritage of the United Kingdom while encouraging a spirit of open-mindedness. Through collaborative projects, students learn the importance of democratic principles, such as valuing every member's contribution and understanding the significance of compromise. |
