Curriculum Intent |
We aim to teach Art students to works as professional Artists and designers do; to follow a creative process and generate ideas to fit a brief or to create a final outcome. An Artist will be proficient in a range of materials and techniques and processes in a range of disciplines such as drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, digital art and sculpture. They will demonstrate confident ability to experiment and analyse the results of their experiments. Artists should be aware of Art movements and Artists, craftspeople and designers and be able to make connections between the characteristics of their work and the Artist work. They can analyse the work of other artists' and should be able to experiment in their style and apply this to the media they are using. They will demonstrate the ability to discuss artwork confidently and be able to articulate their opinions and thoughts about the artwork in a constructive way. They can use the formal elements of Art to analyse artwork and to discuss symbolism and meaning implied by the use of imagery, colour etc. They should be able to explore themes and concepts to develop projects from an initial starting point through to a final outcome. This will begin with the initial exploration of a key word or starting point but should be opened to the widest possible understanding including non –examples of the word to allow a full investigation of concept and imagery to begin. Artists will take their initial ideas and develop a sketchbook journey through to a final outcome in one or more Art discipline. They will be able to work to a deadline or will have a time restriction so that work needs to be concluded and presented in a professional manner.

Links to CARES values |
Courage – We never give up! Art encourages students to take creative risks and express personal ideas, even when they feel uncertain. Whether it’s trying a new technique, receiving critique, or presenting work to others, students show courage by persevering through challenges and embracing mistakes as part of the learning process.
Aspiration – We work hard to make our dreams happen. Art helps students to aspire by setting goals for improvement and striving to produce meaningful work. At GCSE level especially, students invest significant time and effort to build portfolios that reflect their personal interests, ambitions, and skills – developing the discipline and passion to pursue creative futures.
Respect – We treat others how we wish to be treated. In art, students explore diverse cultures, ideas, and perspectives, which fosters respect for others’ experiences and expressions. In group critiques or collaborative projects, students practice listening, encouraging, and giving constructive feedback in a supportive way.
Equality – We accept others for who they are. Art is a universal form of expression where every voice matters. Students are encouraged to explore their identities and value the individuality of others. Through studying artists from varied backgrounds, and celebrating differences in style and interpretation, art promotes equality and inclusion.
Self-control – We manage our behaviour and impulses. Creating art takes focus, patience, and persistence. Students must demonstrate self-control to refine their ideas, manage time effectively, and improve technique. Whether working independently or in a busy classroom, staying calm and committed is key to success in the subject.
