Message from the Headteacher
As usual, we have had a busy week at school. I had the opportunity to visit several local primary schools, where I met with prospective students to share insights about life at Harrogate High School. During these visits, I felt a deep sense of pride as I showcased a short clip featuring our students discussing their experiences. They described our school using words like “caring,” “friendly,” “supportive,” and “inclusive,” all of which embody our CARES Values.
Restart a Heart Training Once again, we are looking forward to welcoming the Yorkshire Ambulance Service to school on Wednesday the 16th of October for the annual 'restart a heart event' for our Year 7 cohort, learning lifesaving CPR skills. The aims of the training is to educate students on how to perform CPR, use a defibrillator, and call 999 if someone collapses Many studies have shown that the likelihood of surviving a cardiac arrest increases significantly when someone nearby knows and performs CPR. Early CPR can double or even triple the chances of survival. We also welcomed parents to the Parents’ Forum and the literacy event last night. I want to extend my gratitude to those who attended. It was lovely to receive the positive feedback. One parent expressed their gratitude at the way school has supported their child since arriving into Year 7. "We are delighted how our child has settled especially after the difficulties he had at primary school. But all the staff's patience and the way in which he has been supported has transformed him. Thank you, all the staff have been wonderful."
At the literacy event, Mrs Rees spoke passionately about the importance of literacy, emphasising that literacy skills are the foundation for all learning and essential for success in school.
These skills not only foster critical thinking and problem-solving abilities but are also vital for effective communication and social interaction. A significant factor contributing to the achievement gap between high and low-performing students is vocabulary. Studies show that differences in the quality of children’s conversations and the use of advanced vocabulary can have lasting effects on their academic performance. Supporting literacy is, therefore, a priority at Harrogate High School. As Friedrich Nietzsche aptly stated, "All I need is a sheet of paper and something to write with, and then I can turn the world upside down." This quote serves as a reminder of the power of written expression and the limitless possibilities that come with literacy.
A reminder for students interested in applying to be part of our student leadership team. The deadline for submission is the end of next week, on October 18th. Please apply using the link below and we look forward to receiving the applications and developing a team that can make a positive impact on the school community.
Wishing you all a positive weekend.
